I would like to personally welcome you to the NJIT Mechanical Engineering (ME) Department’s website. I hope that you will find this site informative and capable of answering questions you may have about our Department, which is home to 17 faculty members, about 460 undergraduate and 100 graduate students. If you are a student either interested or enrolled in our program, you can find information pertaining to our academic program such as curriculum, registration, advisement, general notices to students, as well as departmental events such as student feedback sessions and seminars. If you are an outside visitor, our website can provide you with a glimpse of the various student activities as well as exciting research activities of our outstanding faculty.
In Mechanical Engineering we teach design, analysis and simulation methods to use scientific discoveries and inventions for developing next generation products and processes. The aim of our ME curriculum at NJIT is to provide a broad-base in Mechanical Engineering, preparing students for successful careers in a large variety of fields such as aerospace, automotive, biomedical, computer-aided design, engineering and manufacturing (CAD/CAE/CAM), defense, heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC), nano/micro technology, novel and/or smart materials, power, robotics, and other applications of engineering. A degree in ME is versatile enough to provide a solid basis for alternate careers such as law, medicine, and business management.
Our students receive a strong foundation in the theory of engineering fundamentals that complements a hands-on approach through state-of-the-art lab courses and an integrated design experience. The latter begins with our Fundamentals of Engineering Design course in the first year and culminates with the senior capstone design course at the end of the curriculum, all involving the latest computer-aided design tools.
We take great pride in our students, and are particularly honored by their annual accomplishments in various competitions of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) and the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), as well as their contribution to numerous research projects.
The Mechanical Engineering Department is located in the Mechanical Engineering Center which houses our lecture halls, faculty and administrative offices, as well as our recently-renovated teaching laboratories including the CAD Lab, the Instrumentation Lab, the Materials and Processing Lab, and the Thermo/Fluids Labs. Our Engine Lab, with the newly installed state-of-the-art internal-combustion and diesel engines, is available for student experiments. These labs are complemented by various research facilities located throughout the campus, most notably the Electron Microscopy Lab and the W.M. Keck Lab, which provide state-of-the-art capabilities to several funded research projects. ME faculty are very actively involved in research in areas such as nano-technology, mechanical and biomedical design, granular and multiphase flows, mechanism synthesis and advanced machining processes some of which is funded through prestigious awards from NSF, DOD, industry and other agencies.
Once again, welcome and thank you for your interest in the Mechanical Engineering Department at NJIT.
Raj S. Sodhi PhD, PE
